Cabin suitcase for Ryanair 2026: exact dimensions and the best options
Choosing the right cabin suitcase for Ryanair can save you a €46 to €75 fee at the boarding gate. With the right dimensions and the right fare, there will be no surprises at the airport. Here is everything you need to know.
What does Ryanair allow in the cabin? 2026 rules
Ryanair distinguishes between two types of hand luggage depending on the fare:
| Fare / Type | Max. size | Max. weight | Free? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small bag (all fares) | 40 × 30 × 20 cm | No specific limit | ✅ Free |
| Cabin suitcase (with Priority) | 55 × 40 × 20 cm | Max. 10 kg | 🔶 With Priority or a premium fare |
⚠️ Watch out: Ryanair measures bags physically with a metal sizer. If your suitcase sticks out by 1 cm (including wheels and handles), you will be charged the fee at the boarding gate. It can cost between €46 and €75.
Priority (from about €12 per flight if you add it when booking) is the cheapest option if you plan to bring a cabin suitcase. Without it, you can only take the 40×30×20 cm small bag on board.
Exact cabin suitcase dimensions for Ryanair
The official size for a cabin suitcase with Priority on Ryanair is 55 × 40 × 20 cm.
An important detail: the dimensions include wheels, handles and any outside pockets. The actual shell is usually 2-3 cm smaller than the manufacturer's label suggests.
Our recommendation: look for suitcases with a 52-53 × 37-38 × 19-20 cm shell to leave a safety margin.

Tips to avoid problems with your cabin suitcase on Ryanair
- Add Priority when you book: it gets more expensive afterwards, and at the boarding gate it costs the most.
- Weigh your cabin suitcase empty before packing. The limit is 10 kg in total.
- If your suitcase has double wheels or bulky front pockets, measure it carefully.
- Bring a combination padlock: Ryanair does not require TSA, but any padlock will do.
- With Priority you board earlier and are guaranteed space in the overhead lockers.
